Step 1: We always become fully acquainted with site and container to be fumigated, including:

  • General layout of the structure, connecting structures, adjacent structures, and escape routes, above and below ground if any.
  • Check over equipment to ensure that product flow has ceased and that equipment has been made as tight as practicable to prevent drafts and/or leakage from it.
  • Check all spouts, conveyers, conduit heat pipes or other possible openings leading from the area to be fumigated to prevent accidents.
  • Number and identification of persons who routinely enter the area to be fumigated; proximity of other persons and animals.
  • The specific commodity and its mode of storage and condition.
  • The commodity's treatment history, if available, to be aware of possible food residues.
  • Accessibility of utility service connections.
  • Location of the nearest telephone or other communication facility.
  • Location of the emergency shut-off stations for electricity, water, and gas.

Step 2: We Post current emergency telephone numbers, i.e., Fire, Police, Hospital, and Physician.
•This information is essential incase poisoning occurs

Step 3: We select a fumigant or combination of fumigants, registered by Kenya Pest Products Control Board (KPPCB) for the work involved.

  • Make sure the chemical or chemicals selected will not result in residues that may be illegal under KPPCB act.
  • Check, mark, and prepare the points of application.
  • Determine the dosage rates. Consider the type of structure and its size, temperature, humidity, how well the structure can be sealed, label restrictions, and the absorption of the fumigant. Our fumigators develop good judgment about specific situations with experience.
Step 4: We study directions, warnings, antidotes, and precautions on the label and on the manufacturer's instruction manual.
  • This is essential in case gas leakages leading to poisons
Step 5: We notify local fire and police authorities and other security personnel about the proposed fumigation's location, date and time, the chemicals to be used, type of protective equipment required, and fire hazard rating.
  • We normally do this as a proactive prevention technique to chemical poisoning
Step 6: We inform local hospital emergency rooms of your fumigation practices and the specific materials used.
  • In case a problem arises, the hospital is aware and reserves hospital admissions
Step 7: Provide authorities with pertinent safety literature on the materials to be used.
  • We do this as a legal requirement
Step 8: Arrange for standby equipment, replacement parts, and an alternate plan of action.
  • This is a prerequisite risk management strategy in case the equipments fail
Step 9: Inform all employees of the operational schedule, potential hazards to life and property, and the required safety measures and emergency procedures.
  • Infact we do carry out drills before we undertake such an exercise

Step 10: Prepare warning signs for posting treated areas, provide for security of building, and arrange for watchmen when required.

  • This avoids the poisoning of those who might not be aware of the procedures

Step 11: Have available first aid equipment and antidotes where applicable.

  • This is a crucial step in the control of the poisoning before the rescue team arrives incase of any gas leakages

Step 12: Plan for application from outside the structure where possible.

  • This rather safer than applying from inside

Step 13: Plan for ventilating the treated space and commodities when the required exposure is finished. Do this before you start treatment.

  • This reduces the risk of residual poisoning by the remnant fumigant

Step 14: Properly identify areas used for storage of fumigant chemicals and provide the conditions required by the manufacturer’s directions

  • We always adhere to the manufacturer’s directions

Step 15: Make sure there are no open fires, motors, or light switches that could spark, or hot surftaces. Such as heal pipes and electric fixtures, within the space to be fumigated.

  • Some of the gas fumigants we use are highly inflammable.

Step 16: Provide fans to distribute the fumigant where applicable. At times weather conditions change in the course of fumigation process and the use of a fan to distribute the fumigant is necessary.

  • This also enhances fumigant penetration

Step 17: Provide gas sampling and/or detection device.

  • This procedure is carried out to ensure that no gaseous fumigant remains in the container after the exercise is over.

Step 18: Make a final check to clear all personnel and non-target animals from the space to be fumigated

  • This proactive activity geared towards prevention of poisoning

We also apply the following procedures;

  • The metal fumigant formulations may be applied to the substances aboard acceptable vessels only after the loading of the substance into the hold or container is completed. Partially loaded or slack holds or containers may be fumigated provided that no additional substances are subsequently loaded into that hold or containers.
  • We provide certification of our fumigation process.
  • We will always advise on the maintenance of the fumigated holds or containers while on transit on the entire voyage.
  • In case of an emergency which requires the containers to be opened while on transit such as structural damage, fire, etc we will advise on what to do
  • We will advise also on appropriate respiratory protection equipment and fumigant gas detection equipment to be kept on board of the vessel. We will coach at least two crew members to be knowledgeable in their use.
